Some Thoughts About The End Times
I just ran across my photocopy of a most remarkable passage which I discovered years ago in a book in the Montana State University Library.  This book   the name of which I failed to record - contained sermons of John Henry Newman and was published in the 1800s.  The quote is taken from pp. 107 & 108; the bracketed, italicized insertions are mine (Fr Wolfe):

POSTSCRIPT

THE above expositions of the teaching of the Fathers on the subject treated, were preached by the Author (John Henry Newman) in the form of Sermons in Advent, 1835, and are illustrated by the following remarkable passage in a letter of Bishop Horsley s, written before the beginning of this century (i.e. in the 1700’s) ; vide British Magazine, May, 1834.

The Church of God on earth will be greatly reduced, as we may well imagine, in its apparent numbers, in the times of Antichrist, by the open desertion of the powers of the world.  This desertion will begin in a professed indifference to any particular form of Christianity, under the pretence of universal toleration; which toleration will proceed from no true spirit of charity and forbearance, but from a design to undermine Christianity, by multiplying and encouraging sectaries.  The pretended toleration will go far beyond a just toleration, even as it regards the different sects of Christians.  For governments will pretend an indifference to all, and will give a protection in preference to none.  All establishments will be laid aside.  From the toleration of the most pestilent heresies, they will proceed to the toleration of Mahometanism, Atheism, and at last to a positive persecution of the truth of Christianity.  In these times the Temple of God will be reduced almost to the Holy Place, that is, to the small number of real Christians who worship the Father in spirit and in truth, and regulate their doctrine and their worship, and their whole conduct, strictly by the word of God.  The merely nominal Christians will all desert the profession of the truth, when the powers of the world desert it.  And this tragical event I take to be typified by the order to St. John to measure the Temple and the Altar, and leave the outer court (national Churches) to be trodden under foot by the Gentiles.  (c.f. Apocalypse 11)  The property of the clergy will be pillaged, the public worship insulted and vilified by these deserters of the faith they once professed, who are not called apostates because they never were in earnest in their profession.  Their profession was nothing more than a compliance with fashion and public authority.  In principle they were always, what they now appear to be, Gentiles.  When this general desertion of the faith takes place, then will commence the sackcloth ministry of the witnesses  (Enoch and Elijah)  There will be nothing of splendour in the external appearance of their churches;  they will have no support from governments, no honours, no emoluments, no immunities, no authority, but that which no earthly power can take away, which they derived from Him, who commissioned them to be His witnesses.  -

Blessed Dom Marmion On Faith
Speaking in a general way, faith is the adhesion of our intelligence to the word of another. When an upright, loyal man tells us something, we admit it, we have faith in his word; to give one's word is to give one's self.

Supernatural faith is the adhesion of our intelligence, not to the word of a man, but to the word of God. God can neither deceive nor be deceived. Faith is the homage rendered to God as the supreme truth and authority. In order that this homage may be worthy of God, we must submit ourselves to the authority of His word, whatever be the difficulties our mind encounters. This Divine word affirms the existence of mysteries beyond our reason; faith can be required from us in things where our senses, our experience seem to tell us the very contrary of what God tells us; but God requires our conviction in the authority of His revelation to be so absolute that if all creation affirmed the contrary we should say to God in spite of everything: "My God, I believe because Thou sayest it."

From Thomas á Kempis
But You, Lord, are always the same. You remain forever, always good, just, and holy; doing all things rightly, justly, and holily, disposing them wisely. I, however, who am more ready to go backward than forward, do not remain always in one state, for I change with the seasons. Yet my condition quickly improves when it pleases You and when You reach forth Your helping hand. For You alone, without human aid, can help me and strengthen me so greatly that my heart shall no more change but be converted and rest solely in You. Hence, if I knew well how to cast aside all earthly consolation, either to attain devotion or because of the necessity which, in the absence of human solace, compels me to seek You alone, then I could deservedly hope for Your grace and rejoice in the gift of new consolation.

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

 Annual Pilgrimage
Please mark your calendars: Our Annual St Rose Philippine Duchesne pilgrimage to Mound City and the shrine will be on September 13th.
Holy Mass will be held at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church in Mound City, KS.  Sack lunch and Stations of the Cross will follow at the Shrine.  Flyers with directions will be available in the back of the church.

Adult Class
Fr Wolfe's adult class will resume Sept. 16th at 7:15 PM at the Merriam Community Center.

Altar Servers
We will begin server activities for the coming year soon. We will have a Knights of the Altar initiation ceremony on Saturday, September 20th after Mass to start the year off. If you have any questions, email or call Sean Maher.

Youth Group
The youth group will resume later in Sept and we shall keep you posted.

Conversion Cathechist Course
Fr de Freitas will start a conversion catechist course on Mon. Sept. 15th at the Merriam community center, starting at about 7pm. The course is for non-Catholics who would like to become Catholics, so if you have friends or family who might be interested in knowing about the Catholic faith but have been hesitant to make any inquiries, now is a perfect opportunity to invite them along. Also if you are a Catholic and would like a brush up on the Catechism, this may also appeal to you. Donuts and coffee will be served.

Additional Daily Mass
The new schedule will take effect starting on Monday Sept 15 with a 6:30 AM Mass each morning at Blessed Sacrament. (Don't worry; we're not canceling the other daily Masses: this is in addition to our existing Mass schedule!) After the noon Mass on Tuesdays we will have a brief Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament, pray the Memorare and sing the Litany of the Sacred Heart for vocations, and then close with Benediction.

A Note from Fr Wolfe
I've asked Fr de Freitas to visit everyone and renew, or enthrone each home to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts; I've also asked him to teach a class for those wishing to convert or anyone who just wants to have a good basic overview of the Faith in one academic year. And I've asked Fr Fongemie - who is a disciple of the great Dominican Fr Garrigou-Lagrange - to teach a monthly class on the Spiritual life.
I had a good time visiting the folks, but it's good to be back - but I will be gone again for awhile in order to make my retreat. (Yeah, I know, doesn't this guy ever stop goofing around?) I will pray for you; please pray for me.

Making A Proper Thanksgiving
Pope Pius XII on the importance of making a proper thanksgiving after receiving Holy Communion:
...should we not approve of those who, when they receive holy communion, remain on in closest familiarity with their divine Redeemer even after the congregation has been officially dismissed, and that not only for the consolation of conversing with Him, but also to render Him due thanks and praise and especially to ask help to defend their souls against anything that may lessen the efficacy of the sacrament and to do everything in their power to cooperate with the action of Christ who is so intimately present. We exhort them to do so in a special manner by carrying out their resolutions, by exercising the Christian virtues, as also by applying to their own necessities the riches they have received with royal Liberality. The author of that golden book The Imitation of Christ certainly speaks in accordance with the letter and the spirit of the liturgy, when he gives the following advice to the person who approaches the altar, "Remain on in secret and take delight in your God; for He is yours whom the whole world cannot take away from you."

From Thomas á Kempis
If you look for rest in this life, how will you attain to everlasting rest? Dispose yourself, then, not for much rest but for great patience. Seek true peace, not on earth but in heaven; not in men or in other creatures but in God alone. For love of God you should undergo all things cheerfully, all labors and sorrows, temptations and trials, anxieties, weaknesses, necessities, injuries, slanders, rebukes, humiliations, confusions, corrections, and contempt. For these are helps to virtue. These are the trials of Christ's recruit. These form the heavenly crown. For a little brief labor I will give an everlasting crown, and for passing confusion, glory that is eternal.
Do you think that you will always have spiritual consolations as you desire? My saints did not always have them. Instead, they had many afflictions, temptations of various kinds, and great desolation. Yet they bore them all patiently. They placed their confidence in God rather than in themselves, knowing that the sufferings of this life are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to come. And you -- do you wish to have at once that which others have scarcely obtained after many tears and great labors?
(The Imitation of Christ Book 3, Chapter 35)

Send Your Angel To Holy Mass
O Holy Angel at my side, go to church for me, kneel in my place at Holy Mass.  At Offertory in my stead take all I am and own, and place it as a sacrifice upon the Altar Throne.  At Holy Consecration’s bell adore with Seraph’s love, my Jesus hidden in the Host come down from Heaven above.  Then pray for those I dearly love and those who cause me grief, that Jesus’ Blood may cleanse all hearts, and suffering souls relieve.  And when the Priest Communion takes, O bring my Lord to me, that His sweet Heart may rest on mine, and I His temple be.  Pray that this Sacrifice Divine may mankind’ sins efface, then bring me Jesus’ blessing home, the pledge of every grace.  Amen

From Thomas á Kempis
THE VOICE OF CHRIST
MY CHILD, in this life you are never safe, and as long as you live the weapons of the spirit will ever be necessary to you. You dwell among enemies. You are subject to attack from the right and the left. If, therefore, you do not guard yourself from every quarter with the shield of patience, you will not remain long unscathed.

Moreover, if you do not steadily set your heart on Me, with a firm will to suffer everything for My sake, you will not be able to bear the heat of this battle or to win the crown of the blessed. You ought, therefore, to pass through all these things bravely and to oppose a strong hand to whatever stands in your way. For to him who triumphs heavenly bread is given, while for him who is too lazy to fight there remains much misery.
Promises Of Our Lord In Favor Of Those Who Honor His Holy Face
1. All those who honor My Face in the spirit of reparation will by so doing perform the office of the pius Veronica.  According to the care they take in making reparation to My Face, disfigured by blasphemers, so will I take care of their souls which have been disfigured by sin.  My Face is the Seal of the Divinity, which has the virtue of reproducing in souls the image of God.  2. Those who by words, prayers or writing defend My Cause in this Work of Reparation I will defend before My Father, and will give them My Kingdom.  3. By offering My Face to My Eternal Father, nothing will be refused, and the conversion of many sinners will be obtained.  4. By My Holy Face, they will work wonders, appease the anger of God and draw down mercy on sinners.  5. As in a kingdom they can procure all that is desired with a coin stamped with the King's effigy, so in the Kingdom of Heaven they will obtain all they desire with the precious coin of My Holy Face.  6. Those who on earth contemplate the wounds of My Face shall in Heaven behold It radiant with glory.  7. They will receive in their souls a bright and constant irradiation of My Divinity, that by their likeness to My Face they shall shine with particular splendor in Heaven.  8. I will defend them, I will preserve them and I assure them of Final Perseverance. +

From Thomas á Kempis
The wise men of the world, the men who lust for the flesh, are wanting in Your wisdom, because in the world is found the utmost vanity, and in the flesh is death. But they who follow You by disdaining worldly things and mortifying the flesh are known to be truly wise, for they are transported from vanity to truth, from flesh to spirit. By such as these God is relished, and whatever good is found in creatures they turn to praise of the Creator. But great -- yes, very great, indeed -- is the difference between delight in the Creator and in the creature, in eternity and in time, in Light uncreated and in the light that is reflected.
O Light eternal, surpassing all created brightness, flash forth the lightning from above and enlighten the inmost recesses of my heart. Cleanse, cheer, enlighten, and vivify my spirit with all its powers, that it may cleave to You in ecstasies of joy. Oh, when will that happy and wished-for hour come, that You may fill me with Your presence and become all in all to me? So long as this is not given me, my joy will not be complete.

A Prayer For My Vocation
O my God, Thou who art the God of wisdom and counsel, Thou who readest in my heart the sincere will to please Thee alone and to govern myself with regard to my choice of a state of life entirely in conformity with Thy most holy desire; grant me by the intercession of the most Blessed Virgin, my Mother, and of my holy patrons, especially of St. Joseph and St. Aloysius, the grace to know what state of life I ought to choose, and when to embrace it, so that in it I may be able to pursue and increase Thy glory, and work out my salvation, and merit that heavenly reward which Thou hast promised to those that do Thy will.  Amen.

From Thomas á Kempis

BEHOLD, my God and my all! What more do I wish for; what greater happiness can I desire? O sweet and delicious word! But sweet only to him who loves it, and not to the world or the things that are in the world.
My God and my all! These words are enough for him who understands, and for him who loves it is a joy to repeat them often. For when You are present, all things are delightful; when You are absent, all things become loathsome. It is You Who give a heart tranquillity, great peace and festive joy. It is You Who make us think well of all things, and praise You in all things. Without You nothing can give pleasure for very long, for if it is to be pleasing and tasteful, Your grace and the seasoning of Your wisdom must be in it. What is there that can displease him whose happiness is in You? And, on the contrary, what can satisfy him whose delight is not in You?

Fr. Wolfe On Vacation
Fr Wolfe will be gone for the next few weeks on vacation.

Adult classes will resume in the middle of September, as will Youth group.

Additional Daily Mass In September
In the middle of September we will start offering a 6:30 AM daily Mass; also, in order to pray for vocations, on Tuesdays immediately after the noon Mass, we will have approximately 15 minutes of Exposition, during which time we will pray the Memorare, sing the Litany of the Sacred Heart and then end with Benediction. Precise dates for all this will be upcoming soon.

Powerful Novena to St. Joseph
It consists in turning to St. Joseph 4 times a day (it does not matter when or where), and honoring him in one of these points each time:

  1. His Fidelity to Grace.  Think about this for a minute, thank God, and ask, thru St Joseph, to be faithful to grace and for the specific favor desired.
  2. His Fidelity to the Interior Life.  Think about this, thank God, and ask.
  3.  His Love for Our Blessed Lady.  Think about this, thank God, and ask.
  4.  His Love for the Holy Child.  Think about this, thank God, and ask.

Aids in the minute consideration of the four points:

  1. His awareness of grace in his soul and desire to increase it.  His cooperation with actual graces which enlightened his mind and moved his will to do good and avoid evil.
  2. His awareness of God and devotion to duty for God’s honor and glory.  His spirit of prayer, remembrance of God’s presence, docility to God’s Holy Will, humility, spirit of sacrifice, etc.
  3. Think of his devotion to Mary.  He realized better than anyone her part in the Divine plan for our salvation.  His natural love for her was increased and perfected by his supernatural love and devotion to her.
  4. He was told the Child was the Son of God and Savior of the world, and he was mindful of his duty of protecting and caring for Jesus.  St Joseph’s faith and love were manifested in the many trials and difficulties he experienced. His love for Jesus was deep, genuine, and profound.

A Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
O most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in this my necessity.  O Star of the Sea, help me, and show me herein you are my Mother.

O Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech thee, from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this my necessity.  There are none that can withstand your power.  O, show me herein you are my Mother.

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3 times)

Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands. (3 times)

From Thomas á Kempis
THE VOICE OF CHRIST
MY CHILD, do not trust in your present feeling, for it will soon give way to another. As long as you live you will be subject to changeableness in spite of yourself. You will become merry at one time and sad at another, now peaceful but again disturbed, at one moment devout and the next indevout, sometimes diligent while at other times lazy, now grave and again flippant.

But the man who is wise and whose spirit is well instructed stands superior to these changes. He pays no attention to what he feels in himself or from what quarter the wind of fickleness blows, so long as the whole intention of his mind is conducive to his proper and desired end. For thus he can stand undivided, unchanged, and unshaken, with the singleness of his intention directed unwaveringly toward Me, even in the midst of so many changing events. And the purer this singleness of intention is, with so much the more constancy does he pass through many storms.

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Four Ends of Sacrifice
…The first end of sacrifice is adoration; …Throughout the ages men have been quick to forget their obligation to worship God, while readily paying homage to the flesh, to wealth, to the progress of science, to reason, to themselves…  This neglect of Christ the Savior is not confined to unbelievers or to the indifferent, but extends to all ungrateful Christians…  They love Him not for His own sake but for their own selfish interests…   It is not uncommon in certain parishes to find that the faithful do not go to Mass except on Sunday, and never pay a visit to the Blessed Sacrament. Christ is left alone in the Eucharist for almost the entire week, whereas each day He could be an abundant source of grace…  adoration of Christ our Savior present in the Eucharist… will of itself make reparation for much ingratitude, indifference and lack of care about salvation.

The second end of sacrifice is thanksgiving for all God’s gifts to man, for the creation of the human race and its elevation to the order of grace and glory, for the redeeming Incarnation, for the institution of the Eucharist and the graces which flow from it, for the innumerable Masses offered and Communions received during the past twenty centuries for the strengthening of souls.

Many people never spare a thought for these divine gifts, and thus they sink to the lowest depths of ingratitude, since these gifts have been so precious and so widespread.  …many people never so much as say “thank you” to their divine benefactor, who is the source of all the gifts in the world.

Since this scourge of ingratitude is not confined to individuals, but has affected groups and societies, there must be collective and public thanksgiving.  This is the second reason for the Eucharist and forms the basis of its name…

The third end of sacrifice is reparation for the sins committed against God, especially for the acts of sacrilege sometimes so atrocious and clearly instigated by the devil.  God alone knows the enormity of some of these acts of sacrilege, which remind us of the treachery of Judas.  In reparation for such abominable behavior, the Mass should be celebrated with reverence…   This act of reparation restores to God the Father and to Christ the accidental glory of which they are deprived by such sins, and it is also a source of joy to them…  Public reparation wards off those heavy, public chastisements of God which the world has deserved by its sins; it also pleads for mercy for sinners, that they may return to the way of salvation and repent of their sins.  All this is accomplished by the act of sacrifice.

The fourth end of sacrifice is to request the divine help and all the graces necessary for salvation, especially the grace of final perseverance.  True, this grace cannot be merited but it can be obtained through …prayer, especially… the highest form of prayer contained in the actual offering of the Sacrifice of the Mass…  We should unite ourselves to His adoration and reparation and thanksgiving.  The value of our own acts are thus increased beyond all measure.

Even after Mass, Christ’s intercession continues in the Eucharist.  We should join in this prolonged act of prayer by making our own prayer less individualistic and more concerned with the Church, its bishops and priests, that God may give them the necessary zeal and courage;  with the peace and concord of nations;  with the freedom of the Church and the sanctification of souls; with the conversion of sinners and unbelievers.  Such prayer is in harmony with the intentions of God, and, if it is offered by several at the same time humbly, confidently and perseveringly, it is certain to bear abundant fruit.

…These, then, are the four ends of sacrifice, and their consideration is not without its practical value because it shows how we remember, in the first place, God’s unending life by the act of adoration; secondly, the past by our act of thanksgiving for gifts received and by our act of reparation for sins committed; and, finally, the future by our request for divine help.

From Thomas á Kempis
THE VOICE OF CHRIST
My child, you should not turn away or be downcast when you hear the way of the perfect. Rather you ought to be spurred on the more toward their sublime heights, or at least be moved to seek perfection.

I would this were the case with you -- that you had progressed to the point where you no longer loved self but simply awaited My bidding and his whom I have placed as father over you. Then you would please Me very much, and your whole life would pass in peace and joy. But you have yet many things which you must give up, and unless you resign them entirely to Me you will not obtain that which you ask.

"I counsel thee to buy of me gold, fire-tried, that thou mayest be made rich"-- rich in heavenly wisdom which treads underfoot all that is low. Put aside earthly wisdom, all human self-complacency.

See also Aborted Fetal Cell Line Vaccines - ".it was the full intention of both the attending abortionist and the researcher present at the foot of the abortion table to destroy those babies specifically to create vaccines. Not only are all equally guilty of assisting in premeditated homicide, but it may very well have been the action of the attending researcher who actually brought about the final demise of the babies. In fact, if the mother was distraught and coerced, one could easily conclude she might very well have been a victim herself.

...during the 1964 epidemic, some doctors in Pennsylvania began advising pregnant women who contracted the disease to abort their child. In a controlled study group, the Wistar Institute worked directly with the abortionists to collect and dissect the fetuses. It was from the 27th fetus that researchers extracted the live virus in the kidney of the baby to be used in the rubella vaccine.

The rubella virus clinically named RA273 (R=Rubella, A=Abortus, 27=27th fetus, 3=3rd tissue explant) was then cultivated on the WI-38 aborted fetal cell line. A later research paper by Stanley Plotkin would reveal that 40 separate fetuses were aborted, with virus strains taken from 34 of them. This means a total of over 80 separate, elective abortions recorded were involved in the research and final production of the present day rubella vaccine: 21 from the original WI-1 through WI-26 fetal cell lines that failed, plus WI-38 itself, plus 61 from the attempts to isolate the rubella virus." The Prayer to St Joseph ordered by Leo XIII
To thee, O blessed Joseph, do we fly in our tribulation, and, having implored the help of thy most holy Spouse, we also now confidently implore thy holy patronage. By that charity with which thou wast united to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by that fatherly affection with which thou didst embrace the Child Jesus, we pray and beseech thee, that thou wouldst look graciously upon thy inheritance which Jesus Christ hath purchased by His Blood, and assist us in our needs by thy powerful intercession. O Most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, protect the chosen people of Jesus Christ; O most loving Father, keep far from us all taint of error and corruption: O most mighty defender, mercifully assist us from heaven  in this conflict with the powers of darkness; and, even as of old thou didst rescue the Child Jesus from the supreme peril of his life, so now defend God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; keep each one of us under thy constant protection, so that supported by thine example and thine aid, we may be enabled to lead a holy life, die a happy death, and obtain everlasting happiness in heaven.  Amen.

From Thomas á Kempis
THE VOICE OF CHRIST

MY CHILD, you can never be perfectly free unless you completely renounce self, for all who seek their own interest and who love themselves are bound in fetters. They are unsettled by covetousness and curiosity, always searching for ease and not for the things of Christ, often devising and framing that which will not last, for anything that is not of God will fail completely.

Hold to this short and perfect advice, therefore: give up your desires and you will find rest. Think upon it in your heart, and when you have put it into practice you will understand all things.

THE DISCIPLE
But this, Lord, is not the work of one day, nor is it mere child's play; indeed, in this brief sentence is included all the perfection of holy persons.

From Thomas á Kempis
Many there are who desire contemplation, but who do not care to do the things which contemplation requires. It is also a great obstacle to be satisfied with externals and sensible things, and to have so little of perfect mortification. I know not what it is, or by what spirit we are led, or to what we pretend -- we who wish to be called spiritual -- that we spend so much labor and even more anxiety on things that are transitory and mean, while we seldom or never advert with full consciousness to our interior concerns.

Alas, after very little recollection we falter, not weighing our deeds by strict examination. We pay no attention to where our affections lie, nor do we deplore the fact that our actions are impure.

Remember that because all flesh had corrupted its course, the great deluge followed. Since, then, our interior affection is corrupt, it must be that the action which follows from it, the index as it were of our lack of inward strength, is also corrupt. Out of a pure heart come the fruits of a good life.
