Some Thoughts About The End Times
I just ran across my photocopy of a most remarkable passage which I discovered years ago in a book in the Montana State University Library.  This book   the name of which I failed to record - contained sermons of John Henry Newman and was published in the 1800s.  The quote is taken from pp. 107 & 108; the bracketed, italicized insertions are mine (Fr Wolfe):

POSTSCRIPT

THE above expositions of the teaching of the Fathers on the subject treated, were preached by the Author (John Henry Newman) in the form of Sermons in Advent, 1835, and are illustrated by the following remarkable passage in a letter of Bishop Horsley s, written before the beginning of this century (i.e. in the 1700’s) ; vide British Magazine, May, 1834.

The Church of God on earth will be greatly reduced, as we may well imagine, in its apparent numbers, in the times of Antichrist, by the open desertion of the powers of the world.  This desertion will begin in a professed indifference to any particular form of Christianity, under the pretence of universal toleration; which toleration will proceed from no true spirit of charity and forbearance, but from a design to undermine Christianity, by multiplying and encouraging sectaries.  The pretended toleration will go far beyond a just toleration, even as it regards the different sects of Christians.  For governments will pretend an indifference to all, and will give a protection in preference to none.  All establishments will be laid aside.  From the toleration of the most pestilent heresies, they will proceed to the toleration of Mahometanism, Atheism, and at last to a positive persecution of the truth of Christianity.  In these times the Temple of God will be reduced almost to the Holy Place, that is, to the small number of real Christians who worship the Father in spirit and in truth, and regulate their doctrine and their worship, and their whole conduct, strictly by the word of God.  The merely nominal Christians will all desert the profession of the truth, when the powers of the world desert it.  And this tragical event I take to be typified by the order to St. John to measure the Temple and the Altar, and leave the outer court (national Churches) to be trodden under foot by the Gentiles.  (c.f. Apocalypse 11)  The property of the clergy will be pillaged, the public worship insulted and vilified by these deserters of the faith they once professed, who are not called apostates because they never were in earnest in their profession.  Their profession was nothing more than a compliance with fashion and public authority.  In principle they were always, what they now appear to be, Gentiles.  When this general desertion of the faith takes place, then will commence the sackcloth ministry of the witnesses  (Enoch and Elijah)  There will be nothing of splendour in the external appearance of their churches;  they will have no support from governments, no honours, no emoluments, no immunities, no authority, but that which no earthly power can take away, which they derived from Him, who commissioned them to be His witnesses.  -

Blessed Dom Marmion On Faith
Speaking in a general way, faith is the adhesion of our intelligence to the word of another. When an upright, loyal man tells us something, we admit it, we have faith in his word; to give one's word is to give one's self.

Supernatural faith is the adhesion of our intelligence, not to the word of a man, but to the word of God. God can neither deceive nor be deceived. Faith is the homage rendered to God as the supreme truth and authority. In order that this homage may be worthy of God, we must submit ourselves to the authority of His word, whatever be the difficulties our mind encounters. This Divine word affirms the existence of mysteries beyond our reason; faith can be required from us in things where our senses, our experience seem to tell us the very contrary of what God tells us; but God requires our conviction in the authority of His revelation to be so absolute that if all creation affirmed the contrary we should say to God in spite of everything: "My God, I believe because Thou sayest it."

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

 Annual Pilgrimage
Please mark your calendars: Our Annual St Rose Philippine Duchesne pilgrimage to Mound City and the shrine will be on September 13th.
Holy Mass will be held at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church in Mound City, KS.  Sack lunch and Stations of the Cross will follow at the Shrine.  Flyers with directions will be available in the back of the church.

Adult Class
Fr Wolfe's adult class will resume Sept. 16th at 7:15 PM at the Merriam Community Center.
 
Altar Servers
We will begin server activities for the coming year soon. We will have a Knights of the Altar initiation ceremony on Saturday, September 20th after Mass to start the year off. If you have any questions, email or call Sean Maher.
 
Youth Group
The youth group will resume later in Sept and we shall keep you posted.
 
Conversion Cathechist Course
Fr de Freitas will start a conversion catechist course on Mon. Sept. 15th at the Merriam community center, starting at about 7pm. The course is for non-Catholics who would like to become Catholics, so if you have friends or family who might be interested in knowing about the Catholic faith but have been hesitant to make any inquiries, now is a perfect opportunity to invite them along. Also if you are a Catholic and would like a brush up on the Catechism, this may also appeal to you. Donuts and coffee will be served.
 
Additional Daily Mass
The new schedule will take effect starting on Monday Sept 15 with a 6:30 AM Mass each morning at Blessed Sacrament. (Don't worry; we're not canceling the other daily Masses: this is in addition to our existing Mass schedule!) After the noon Mass on Tuesdays we will have a brief Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament, pray the Memorare and sing the Litany of the Sacred Heart for vocations, and then close with Benediction.
 
A Note from Fr Wolfe
I've asked Fr de Freitas to visit everyone and renew, or enthrone each home to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts; I've also asked him to teach a class for those wishing to convert or anyone who just wants to have a good basic overview of the Faith in one academic year. And I've asked Fr Fongemie - who is a disciple of the great Dominican Fr Garrigou-Lagrange - to teach a monthly class on the Spiritual life.
I had a good time visiting the folks, but it's good to be back - but I will be gone again for awhile in order to make my retreat. (Yeah, I know, doesn't this guy ever stop goofing around?) I will pray for you; please pray for me.
 
Making A Proper Thanksgiving
Pope Pius XII on the importance of making a proper thanksgiving after receiving Holy Communion:
...should we not approve of those who, when they receive holy communion, remain on in closest familiarity with their divine Redeemer even after the congregation has been officially dismissed, and that not only for the consolation of conversing with Him, but also to render Him due thanks and praise and especially to ask help to defend their souls against anything that may lessen the efficacy of the sacrament and to do everything in their power to cooperate with the action of Christ who is so intimately present. We exhort them to do so in a special manner by carrying out their resolutions, by exercising the Christian virtues, as also by applying to their own necessities the riches they have received with royal Liberality. The author of that golden book The Imitation of Christ certainly speaks in accordance with the letter and the spirit of the liturgy, when he gives the following advice to the person who approaches the altar, "Remain on in secret and take delight in your God; for He is yours whom the whole world cannot take away from you."

They placed their confidence in God rather than in themselves, knowing that the sufferings of this life are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to come. And you -- do you wish to have at once that which others have scarcely obtained after many tears and great labors?

Back To School Mass
The Back to School Mass will be on September 2nd at Noon. Everyone is welcome! There will be a picnic following at the Herman Laird Park. It is located on Johnson Drive & Cody in Shawnee. Please bring your own lunch and drinks for your family. Those with any questions may call Maria Perez.

Altar Servers

Children’s Choir
Children's Choir will resume practice on Sunday Sept. 7. Practice will go from 10:30 to 10:55 a.m. on Sunday mornings in the K of C room. O Holy Angel at my side, go to church for me, kneel in my place at Holy Mass.  At Offertory in my stead take all I am and own, and place it as a sacrifice upon the Altar Throne.  At Holy Consecration’s bell adore with Seraph’s love, my Jesus hidden in the Host come down from Heaven above.  Then pray for those I dearly love and those who cause me grief, that Jesus’ Blood may cleanse all hearts, and suffering souls relieve.  And when the Priest Communion takes, O bring my Lord to me, that His sweet Heart may rest on mine, and I His temple be.  Pray that this Sacrifice Divine may mankind’ sins efface, then bring me Jesus’ blessing home, the pledge of every grace.  Amen

Confirmation Class Resumes Today
We are resuming earlier this year since Confirmation Day is fast approaching. For those preparing at home, if you have not already done so, please contact Tony or Christine Funk for testing and interview information. Students must be 12 years old by Confirmation Day, Oct. 4. (Other catechism classes will begin after Labor Day, Sept. 7)

Promises Of Our Lord In Favor Of Those Who Honor His Holy Face
1. All those who honor My Face in the spirit of reparation will by so doing perform the office of the pius Veronica.  According to the care they take in making reparation to My Face, disfigured by blasphemers, so will I take care of their souls which have been disfigured by sin.  My Face is the Seal of the Divinity, which has the virtue of reproducing in souls the image of God.  2. Those who by words, prayers or writing defend My Cause in this Work of Reparation I will defend before My Father, and will give them My Kingdom.  3. By offering My Face to My Eternal Father, nothing will be refused, and the conversion of many sinners will be obtained.  4. By My Holy Face, they will work wonders, appease the anger of God and draw down mercy on sinners.  5. As in a kingdom they can procure all that is desired with a coin stamped with the King's effigy, so in the Kingdom of Heaven they will obtain all they desire with the precious coin of My Holy Face.  6. Those who on earth contemplate the wounds of My Face shall in Heaven behold It radiant with glory.  7. They will receive in their souls a bright and constant irradiation of My Divinity, that by their likeness to My Face they shall shine with particular splendor in Heaven.  8. I will defend them, I will preserve them and I assure them of Final Perseverance. +
